February: Carnival, Op. 37a, movement 2 is one of 12 character pieces for solo piano from a collection of the different months of the year in Russia, called ‘The Seasons’ by Peter Ilyich Tschaikovsky. He composed them during the same time he was writing his popular ballet, Swan Lake. Nathan’s rousing orchestration is for 2 Fl (2° = Picc), 2 Ob, 2 Cl in A, Bs. Cl, 2 Bsn, C’bsn, 4 Hns, 2 Tpts, 3 Tbns, Tuba, Timp, 2 Perc, and Strings.
