Pietà - SATB [5'00"]

Pietà seeks to evoke a religious tone of solemnity and tranquil tonal chords, although the music is modal and, at times, bitterly dissonant. It is scored acapella. Setting the biblical text from the Crucifixion in John 19:25-27, the SATB chorus sings the following:

5 Near the cross of Jesus stood His mother [and her sister, as well as Mary the wife of Clopas and Mary Magdalene]. 26 When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son.” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” So from that hour, this disciple took her into his home. It is scored acapella.
